Planète Céramique – Paint your own Pottery

Planète Céramique is run by Gail Koerber and offers activities with no set age group. Come along an paint your own pottery and enjoy a cup of tea and a good social chat.

“Here is  the information about my  business Planète Céramique.
I first came to France in 1999, and spent 10 years in the Lot et Garonne.
We then moved to Bordeaux in 2009, and I had the idea to open a paint your own pottery studio, like you find in cities all across the States, the UK, Canada, etc.

I started my PYOP business Planète Céramique in Bordeaux on the rue du Jardin Public. I was there for three years, and then I decided to move both my house and my shop to Le Bouscat.

I now have a cozy shop on the avenue de le Libération in Le Bouscat.

Paint your own Pottery is a great activity for the whole family. My customers are about half adults,  half children. There are no lessons, and no memberships fees. You just come along when you are in the mood, and you can get painting.

How does it work?

I have about 100 different ceramic items to choose from. ( plates, mugs, bowls, vases, tea pots, money boxes, pitchers…) They are porous at this stage and cannot be used yet.

You choose your piece, take a seat and start painting. I have many different examples to inspire people who need a little help getting started.

While you’re painting you can have a cup of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate.

Most people tell me they find it extremely relaxing. Many parents come in with their babies, or toddlers to make plates or other items with the hand-prints or footprints of their little ones. These items make great gifts for Grandparents, Godparents or friends.

When the painting is finished, it’s now my job to ‘fire’ the objects.
First I ‘glaze’ them and when that’s dry I load them into my kiln and fire them. This takes approximately 16 hours. The kiln heats up to a very high temperature very slowly, stays at that temperature for ten minutes, and then starts to cool down very slowly.

People can usually  pick up their finished masterpieces in one or two weeks.

Now the objects are ready to be used. You can drink out of the mugs, use the plates for lunch, and so on. It’s great to start the day with a cup of tea in a mug that you’ve painted yourself.
I run workshops from time to time where I teach a special technique, or I organise themed projects for the holidays.

As far as how much it costs, people pay for each item. Everything is included in the price ( the time in the shop, the paints and materials, the glazing and the firing).
Prices start at 15€ for a small plate or mug, and go up to 40€ for a very large bowl. (there are no other costs).

I have various events coming up in November and December.

Once a month I organise something called PaintApéro. I do this with my friend Chrissie Sally. It’s an evening when everyone is free to bring a bottle and we show everyone how to paint  a painting step by step ( on canvas!). These evenings are hugely popular in the States where they are called Paint and Sip nights.
