Those of you that have been living in Bordeaux for a few years will most deffinately have graced the tiny cavern that was called ‘El Inca’.

El Inca was a thriving hub of musical and social spheres, where every night of the week there would be up to three bands playing. The venue saw many years of underground sucess and was a great place for young bands to cut their teeth along with international indy acts being able to connect with a wider audience.

The booking for El Inca was handled by Milos Ares, originally born in Pérou, who lived there until he was 10 years old and then travelled to Qatar as a resident for another 10 years… and now he has made his home in Bordeaux for more than 12 years.

Milos started Sea of Flames Records in January 2010, with his main goal being to book and promote artists in and around the city of Bordeaux. The Sea of Flames artist register has a long list of varied and different styles, but when asked what the main problem of his work is he tells me that “there isn’t enough venues, bars, restaurants or appartments to cover all the bands wanting to tour here. The gigs that are available can’t be too loud (noise complaints) so for the moment i am doing a lot of indie folk music, which i am also very happy with…”

Since the El Inca days, he is now director and booking agent for the Apollo bar, which prides itself on supplying locals with a tasty blend of soul, funk and jazz music most nights of the week.

The Sea of Flames Records also has affiliations with Santosha, Bulle de Fabrique’s, la pharmacie de Garde (ex el inca), Funky Burger, Azuli, le Sqar… He also mentioned that he is looking to open a new venue in Bordeaux, “as soon as I can find a proper place and as soon as I feel the Apollo can fly on it’s own wings, hopefully we’ll see in a year”.

Milos is a man of many talents as he also plays in local bands such as, milos unplugged, Standard flower bomb, Leviathan…

If you are an international or local musician and would like to play in Bordeaux, Milos details are below.

Practically everyone in France has seen the name ‘Mark Brenner’ on a concert listing. And then there are those in the know… a loyal following that’s growing with every show.

Mark Brenner was born in Norwich, England. He studied at Norwich School and Wymondham College, before turning-down an opportunity to study Drama at Exeter University. Instead, he opted for music, which resulted in lots of ups and downs with a number of bands, and included a spell as a DJ and nightclub manager.

Mark eventually left Britain (for entirely personal reasons) in a tiny two-seater Cessna light aircraft. After stopping-off at Cherbourg to buy a pack of Gaulloises (“the taste of France”), the plane finally landed at La Teste, in the south-west. That’s how Mark Brenner arrived in the Bordeaux region of France. He sold the plane, grabbed his acoustic guitar and began busking in Arcachon and Cap Ferret (two popular seaside resorts). By late September 1995 he realised to his horror that the weather had become pretty much as bad as in his native Britain, and he launched what is probably one of the most unlikely of any international pop singers’ careers.

Combining a wide range of influences (from pop, rock, jazz and world music), mixing his own excellent songs with a number of carefully-chosen covers, Mark has become a kind of International star within his own chosen circuit. He could have become any number of things, but thanks to his talent and charisma, watching him in action on stage with his superb band of musicians, you can tell he’s picked the right vocation.

For more than 10 years, Yann Arthus-Bertrand has been drawing a portrait of the planet through his aerial pictures. These years of travel and world’s overflights have given him a global vision of the world and its borders. Nonetheless, very quickly, Yann Arthus-Bertrand felt something missing in this universal testimony : the word of Man. To collect the experience and philosophy of the life of the world’s inhabitants through filmed interviews was then the following stage.

With this intention, several cameramen traveled to 75 countries in 4 years to interview the inhabitants of the Earth. The questions which were retained are those which touch Humanity, everywhere, and since always. These portraits are so individualistic that highlight the universality. They provoke, touch and push to self-questioning. These meetings add great value because of their diversity, reflections and perspectives, which they open.

The visitors can then go to the meeting of “6 billion Others” by listening to their filmed testimonies in their original language (translation in French and English of the whole of the interviews).

The heart of the exhibition consists of projections of faces on a central mosaic or, in a more intimist way, in spaces of projection including 1 to 14 screens, propitious places for confidence. The visitor discovers the whole of the lightest to the deepest words collected (convictions, beliefs, laughter, songs, moving anecdotes…).

Well, if you’ve taken a stroll around the centre of town over the past few months it would have been hard to miss life size multi-coloured cows dottering the side walk.

The Cow Parade is an international public art exhibition that has been featured in major world cities over the past twelve years.

Since the 1st of April, the cows in resin of « Bordeaux & Cow 2010 » had entered their workshop in order to be customised by selected artists and prepared for the private inauguration at the Bordeaux City Hall on the 3rd of June. They have been bighting up the streets, squares and parks of the city ever since and will remain there until the 14th of September.

At the end of the public exhibition, the painted cows will be put up for auction and 50% of the total will be donated to charity.

The concept of a ‘Cow Parade’, was born in Zurich and has had a significant impact on tourism. The parade has attracted more and more visitors, up to today roughly 100 million people have admired more than 5,000 cows from the different parades.

Designers, painters and photographers were jumping at the chance to express their art and decorate the cows keeping the in theme to represent the diversity and riches of Aquitaine.

You better get a MOO’ve on, before these cows are put out to pasture… (I know, but it had to be said!)

When: Until the 14th September, 2010
Where: Bordeaux Centre and around
Cost: Free!

During the week between the 21st – 26th of March, Bordeaux will be turning it’s streets a bit digital…

The project ‘Bordeaux Digital City’ includes a set of new e-services to accompany the urban development of the city and digi vibe of the residence. From the development of things like smart phone apps, public Wi-Fi access points, fidelity cards and large outdoor building projections.

I reckon it’s a step for the city of Bordeaux to step into the technology age and here’s a week to try to rally troops.

When: 21st – 26th March
Where: City of Bordeaux **
Cost: Free!

** Special note: There will be a digital projection on the facades at the Place du Palais from 8pm onwards.

Well, either you’re a Rugby fan or you’re not… so I guess this post is for people that are!!

So the season is moving into the tail end of the season with only a little over a month before we hit that wonderful time of year which is FINALS FEVER!!

Obviously after last weekends’ drumming of the French national team by the Italians, there maybe a few less supporters out there… in saying that, club Rugby in the land of the tri-colours is undoubtedly able to weather the storm.

So firstly, I wanted to bring to people’s attention that the Union Bordeaux-Bègles has made a stark turnaround from their mid-table finish in last year’s Pro D2 competition. After a few notable signings for the start of the new season (QLD Red’s, Blair Connor & Kiwi, Matthew Clarkin) the team has really seemed to gel and are sitting fourth from the top of the ladder.

So what I suggest is to get along and cheer the lads on… you never know, they may even end up in the
TOP 14 next year?!

Secondly, I’ve come across this great blog for French Club Rugby. It seems to be regularly updated and has some interesting articles. Sign up to their mailing list here. Check it out!

Ruck on…
