If your looking for something to do this Saturday (03/04) and feel like kicking back to a little Roots, Rock, Reggae over a plate of tapas, why not drop by L’Incontournable bar?!

Some of you may know the L’Incontournable as the old ‘Eat & Soul’. The place still offers a cool atmosphere, funky tunes and some pretty decent grub at a good price.

The bordelaise association Monoquini presents an evening of experimental cinema and video. This Saturday they showcases québécoise Amy Lockharts films.

Amy constructs her films by using cut outs from cardboard and colour paper in stop motion format, giving a result that is surreal but at the same time mysteriously attractive.

The evening also plays host to other independant Candian products that were produced last year.

Support independant art and cinema by getting along to this event.

Deep Street Soul are a Funk & Soul group from Melbourne, Australia. They formed in early 2006 with the simple aim of recapturing some old skool southern flavors they’d DJ’d over the previous decade. Inspired by the breakout of nufunk throughout Europe & the States (not forgetting Osaka Monaurail and Australia’s own – The Bamboos) they hit the clubs. Starting with an initial batch of Booker T & Meter’s covers, these quickly morphed into their own set of raw break filled funk & soul.

This month has the band touring through the UK, France and Spain on their maiden voyage in Europe.

Tomorrow night they are playing a free set at the Apollo bar and then a full set at the Saint-Ex with Randa & the Soul Kingdom (AUS).

I know it’s a Monday night and sure you’ll be a little jaded from the weekend but in all honesty these guys are too good to miss. Drop in after work, order yourself a beer and kick back to some funkified soul tunes from down under!

When: Monday 12th April
Where: Apollo Bar (7pm – 9pm) – Saint-Ex (9pm)
Cost: Apollo Bar – FREE! ; Saint-Ex – €8

The Brian Jonestown Massacre (BJM) is coming to Bordeaux this Saturday!

The neo-psychedelic rock band, led by Anton Newcombe, have fought against the test of time and up to 60 odd lineup changes, to remain an influential powerhouse on the alternative rock scene.

Formed in the early 1990’s in San Francisco, the band have recorded albums that could fit into a variety of musical genres across their history. From 60’s psychedelia to elements of Middle Eastern and Brazilian music and even displays of country and rhythm and blues… the BJM always remain fresh and creative.

BJM has undergone many personnel changes, with Anton Newcombe being the only consistent member.

For those of you who didn’t know… The name “Brian Jonestown Massacre” is a mash-up of The Rolling Stones’ guitarist Brian Jones and the infamous mass cult suicide in Jonestown, Guyana.

They are touring extensively throughout Europe and the US from April until June to support their latest release, ‘Who Killed Sgt. Pepper?’.

Catch them this weekend, bring your ear plugs.

When: Saturday 24th April
Where: Espace Tatry, 170 cours du Médoc, 33000, Bordeaux ; Ph : 05 57 87 05 99
Cost : €15 / €20

The Rocher de Palmer will open its doors this year in Cenon (just outside Bordeaux city) to provide another chance for locals to delve into some world music culture.

The entertainment arena contains two theatres (1,200 and 650 places), a gig hall (250 places), a workshop (20 places), a resourse centre and a bar and restaurant.

While waiting for its opening next September, the association ‘Musiques de Nuit’ who is responsible for programming the events at the Rocher de Palmer are putting on a series of concerts in lead up to the opening of the arena. The concerts will take place at the Château Palmer de Cenon (single price around €5) and ‘Hors les Murs’ for concerts organised in various places around Bordeaux : Rock School Barbey, Krakatoa, Fémina, Trianon, salle du Vigean, la Caravelle, etc.

The gigs are really tailored for the jazz, funk, world music loving crowd with most of the artists being from these genres.

Before the opening these concerts will provide a taste of what you’ll be able to see once the Rocher de Palmer opens for business.

Those of you that have been living in Bordeaux for a few years will most deffinately have graced the tiny cavern that was called ‘El Inca’.

El Inca was a thriving hub of musical and social spheres, where every night of the week there would be up to three bands playing. The venue saw many years of underground sucess and was a great place for young bands to cut their teeth along with international indy acts being able to connect with a wider audience.

The booking for El Inca was handled by Milos Ares, originally born in Pérou, who lived there until he was 10 years old and then travelled to Qatar as a resident for another 10 years… and now he has made his home in Bordeaux for more than 12 years.

Milos started Sea of Flames Records in January 2010, with his main goal being to book and promote artists in and around the city of Bordeaux. The Sea of Flames artist register has a long list of varied and different styles, but when asked what the main problem of his work is he tells me that “there isn’t enough venues, bars, restaurants or appartments to cover all the bands wanting to tour here. The gigs that are available can’t be too loud (noise complaints) so for the moment i am doing a lot of indie folk music, which i am also very happy with…”

Since the El Inca days, he is now director and booking agent for the Apollo bar, which prides itself on supplying locals with a tasty blend of soul, funk and jazz music most nights of the week.

The Sea of Flames Records also has affiliations with Santosha, Bulle de Fabrique’s, la pharmacie de Garde (ex el inca), Funky Burger, Azuli, le Sqar… He also mentioned that he is looking to open a new venue in Bordeaux, “as soon as I can find a proper place and as soon as I feel the Apollo can fly on it’s own wings, hopefully we’ll see in a year”.

Milos is a man of many talents as he also plays in local bands such as, milos unplugged, Standard flower bomb, Leviathan…

If you are an international or local musician and would like to play in Bordeaux, Milos details are below.
