Living in Bordeaux, we aren’t short of finding a place to buy a bottle of red!

But what about where to go for a wee dram of whisky?

Look no further than the whisky and wine specialists at ‘Cave Art et Vins’ located in the heart of Bordeaux at Place du Palais (at the the foot of the majestic Port de Cailhau).

The cellar with its 200m2 floor space, offers visitors a rigorous selection of more than 1500 wines, champagne, alcohols, beers & spirits.
More than 700 whiskies are at your disposal, nearly 100 beers from all over the globe (Belgian, German…) without counting the 700 wines from the vineyards of Bordeaux, France and the world.

A special mention has to go to the display for the whisky, which is very tastefully presented in the corner of the shop. You’ll find a vast selection of malts and a chance to chat to the owner, who knows just about everything you need to know about choosing a good bottle (not bad for a Frenchman!).
They organsie free public tastings most weeks and also do private functions.

Shopping for Expats!

British products online.

For all expats, living abroad comes with it’s own postive and negative points. Over the years, the things that I’ve missed the most are the things we take for granted.

Take for example, ducking down to the corner shop to pick up a jar of Marmite (or vegemite in my case) when you suddenly realise that you’ve run out… it’s not always going to be possible in the South of France!

That’s where shopping online can really lend a hand!

I’ve recently had a good experience using the guys over at British Corner Shop, who not only have a vast array of anglo goodies but are also a very professional set up with efficient service.

British Corner Shop is the online supermarket for expats, delivering over 8,000 branded British food, drink, toiletry and household products to customers doorsteps, wherever they are in the world.

As well as the retail side to the business they also have a trade and bulk business, where they supply anything from single and multiple box orders through mixed pallet orders to containers of single product lines (dare say this is interesting for Anglo resto’s).

As well as popular ambient products such as Heinz Tomato Soup, Bisto Gravy and Marmite BCS also supply customers in France (and other selected European destinations) a range of chilled items, like sausages, bacon, cheese and yogurt.

Another great aspect is if there is a products you want but cannot find on the website all you need to do is email their product sourcing team through the ‘suggest a product’ form, and they will do their best to find the product and add it to the website. They’ll even email you to let you know when it is available.

If you’re into shopping online they have a reward scheme where if you register with BCS you can earn 1 reward points for every euro you spend, making it very easy to save money against future orders. You can also earn reward points by writing product review and buying selected products.

Like most shops, the new year not only brings about resolutions that we struggle to keep but it also brings about ‘les soldes’!! Throughout January they have significant reductions on products such as Walkers Crisps, Angel Delight, Pataks Sauces and Bassets sweets.

Shipping to France is €14.86 for up to 30kgs of shopping but if you spend over €120 this is reduced to €7.19.

The quintessentially British perfume house Penhaligon’s, has recently opened their third iconic boutique in France. With a new innovative design, the boutique sits within the stunning architecture of the City of Bordeaux.
Designed by Christopher Jenner, London, the new design continues to take inspiration from its British heritage. Classic Edwardian splendour is combined with modern designs including purple padded walls reminiscent of chesterfield sofas and ceiling roses inspired by Westminster Abbey. Glossy Brighton Pavilion onion dome chandeliers, extensive marquetry and handcrafted furniture have been created to reflect the brand’s iconic bottle shape.
Following the highly successful launch of the brand’s first Asian boutique in Singapore in 2011, the new design concept has since been adapted internationally in Hong Kong and London.
‘Our new project for Penhaligon’s in Bordeaux is an eccentric pearl, luxury English craftsmanship and jaunty finishes create a feel for England in ‘La perle d’Aquitaine’ – Christopher Jenner

About Penhaligon’s Ltd

Penhaligon’s is a fine English fragrance house, founded in 1870 by William Penhaligon. Their passion is to continue William Penhaligon’s incredible legacy of creative and innovative perfumery, challenging the traditions of the art and seeking new ways to interpret elegance. Their scents are still made in England using the finest rare ingredients. Penhaligon’s holds two long-standing Royal Warrants; from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh (granted 1956) and from HRH The Prince of Wales (granted 1988).
Penhaligon’s fragrant adventure began in the Victorian era of discovery and carries through into the future as they still strive to create original scents for the discerning eccentrics of today. True modern dandies and bold women who are proud to go their own way.
William Penhaligon was an Englishman living in an age of excess and flamboyance. William was said to be witty, wildly creative and always inspired by the unusual. Originally a Cornish barber, he moved to London, where he eventually became Court Barber and Perfumer to Queen Victoria.
Hammam Bouquet, his first scent, was dreamt up by William in 1872 after inhaling the steam and sulphurous aromas of his neighbouring Turkish baths. Rather than designing a scent for an occasions, Pehaligon’s scents encompass an occasion or event within the scent…. rather like la madeleine de proust!
Over 135 years since the doors of the Penhaligon’s barber shop first opened on Jermyn Street in London, William’s hugely precious archives continue evolve and expand world wide (and now in Bordeaux!).
Times may change, trends may ebb and flow but the great traditions of Penhaligon’s continue.

To commemorate the recent opening of Penhaligon’s in Bordeaux, Penhaligon’s and Bordeaux Expats are happy to announce that the first 25 readers who visit the store and mention Bordeaux Expats will receive a FREE scent library!

Sophie’s Store: Unique American & British Speciality Foods, Accessories, Decoration & On-Line Boutique
My Anglophone colleagues and I recently revelled in a Friday Comité d’Entreprise visit from Sophie’s store, Talence. Drawing from her years of experience working in San Francisco she offers luxury products sourced from around the world and brings a welcome splash of international colour to the Bordeaux scene.

Sophie, an American living in Talence has launched an original American and British concept store. A European first, her online retail experience offers top quality international products with a ‘local store’ feel.
With a range of luxury gourmet, accessory and decorative artisan goods, Sophie’s Store also offers also offer a line of life-to-go products such as bottles from California, travel coffee mugs, lunchboxes and shopping bags.

The body care section includes candles and top quality body care products. Come and visit the show room in Talence for the “real” experience.
She has an astonishing range of well selected brands that are hard to find elsewhere. I picked up the US Blueberry pancake mix which went down a storm last weekend. There is also a mindboggling selection of sauces (bbq honey mustard!), snacks (Pipers sweet chilli!) as well as tons of other stuff. We’ll be going back soon for family birthday prezzies and other goodies.
The store is at 261 route de Toulouse (only open Friday/Sat so call ahead for times…) and the website is first class. Sophie’s Store already has links with varous local clubs – The Bordeaux Womens Club and Les Drôles d’Entrepreneurs, and is covered in a variety of blogs and press articles.

Sophie is currently doing the rounds of Comité d’Entreprises and welcomes any company CE offers for her to come and showcase her products. Home (tupperware style) partys are also on offer. She is looking to hire direct (VDI) sales people so get in touch if you are interested.

Choclo Project exists to improve the situation and encourage the creativity of underprivileged children in partnership with select charities in Peru. It is done by transforming their touching drawings into graphics on their products.

These products are then sold to generate funds for these charities to finance projects that allow the children to grow up in a creative and safe environment. They are not only dedicated to providing the children they sponsor with the freedom to express themselves, but also strive to provide them with choices and opportunities. By nourishing their creative skills, teaching them new artistic techniques, and giving value to their work we hope to present art and design as a potential path to change.

The Project donates 5% of the sale price of their garments to the associations they partner with. This can be between 50 and 100% of profit depending on through which channels the product was sold. With the help of our Ambassadors they also organize fundraisers to help generate extra financing for the homes they support.

The Choclo Project is the brainchild of Australian born, Bordeaux resident, Roland Wimbush.

“The idea for the Choclo Project came during a surf trip to South America in 2008. While travelling and surfing along the Chilean and Peruvian coastline I was invited to visit an orphanage in Lima run by a friend of my Peruvian mother. Cristina explained to me how most of these children had been abandoned and some even left for dead in rubbish bins. Having grown up in Australia and having a wonderful childhood this was really hard to imagine and comprehend. Other than the unexplainable joy of the children what really struck me that day were their drawings that had been pinned up on a wall. I was totally amazed at how powerful they were. With the help of some friends I created some clothing using the drawings as graphics. The next year thanks to a big fundraiser and the sale of those products we were able to send 8000 euros to Cristina and the kids at Nuevo Futuro to buy the medication and food that the kids needed so desperately.”

Roland has always been infatuated with self-expression through movement. He started surfing at the age of 10 and got hooked on skiing at the age of 16. Torn between following his passion for sport and his affinity for design he started doing ski seasons in Canada during his summer holidays at Industrial design school. Armed with a design degree and ski instructor qualification he left Australia to learn more about his Peruvian heritage. He immediately fell in love with his mother’s native home and soon felt at home there. He ended up spending 2 years in South America, learning the language, working as an interior/furniture designer, skiing in the Cordillera and surfing the multitude of amazing left hand point breaks. His desire to blend his passions with his career led him to sign up for a Masters degree in Performance sportswear design in the UK. He went on to design sports clothing and equipment for some of the big names in the ski and surf industry, testing and improving the products himself. After having worked for brands such as Salomon, Billabong, O’Neill and Oxbow he then took a new direction. Frustrated with the values in the action sports industry he signed up for a yoga teacher-training course in Byron Bay, Australia and launched the Choclo Project, a brand built on giving back.

Teaming up with a local shaper they decorate a surfboard that will not only inspire the collection but also take them on a stunning journey to some of Peru’s best waves and most unusual locations. Professional surfer and Choclo Mentor Georgia Fish joins them for the ride and also shares her knowledge of nutrition with the mothers of the children. Choclo Project is an ethical clothing brand that gives back to underprivileged children.

The Choclo Project is the brainchild of Australian born, Bordeaux resident, Roland Wimbush. He and his team plan to travel to Mexico with a clear goal: to use art to transform the lives of children in need.

Please read on from a word from Roland..

Hola amigos,

I am sending you this message because you have always supported and followed my other baby, Choclo Project. Today we need your help to finance a trip to help the abandoned and homeless children of Misión México. We are not asking for a simple handout however so please read on.

This summer we will travel to Mexico with a clear goal: to use art to transform the lives of children in need. By nourishing their creative skills, teaching them new artistic techniques and giving value to their work we will present art as a means to improving their situation, by providing them with an education. Aside from building their confidence and self-esteem through art we will also encourage their creativity and self-expression through surfing, skateboarding and yoga. These activities are not only vital in teaching them life skills but also improving their health and well-being. During these sessions they will be able to forget their past and simply enjoy the moment.

Currently 20 million children live in poverty in Mexico. These children often come from dysfunctional families with major economic problems and as a result are far more likely to drop out of school, and are often victims of abuse and violence. Many of these children and adolescents end up living in the streets where they are exposed to drugs, alcohol and crime. In Mexico the streets are often run by the drug cartels making their chance of survival even more limited.

We are not asking you to make a simple donation as we are offering product packs in return for your contribution. And even if you decide not to participate financially you can help by simply sharing this with friends and relations. The more awareness we can create the more chance we have of making this trip happen. To find out more about the project, participate or simply see what we are offering in return for your highly appreciated contributions please go to:

http://www.kisskissbankbank.com/choclo-project-free-the-creativity-of-the-mexican-children

Thank you so much once more for your ongoing contribution to the Project and the children we support. We will of course send regular updates and photos of the trip to all the people that contribute. We have set a high objective so really your help is fundamental.

Muchisimas gracias,
Roland.

His dream is to share his love for the region by creating original Bordeaux gifts that will travel the world with visitors to the city.
BORDEAUX SHOP is the best place to find unique souvenirs to bring home or for the perfect gift for your friends or family.

Original’U.S – the taste of home comes to Bordeaux

My wife and I are originally from the West Indies, but have a lot of experience with American culture. We arrived in Bordeaux a few months ago and recently set up Bordeaux’s very first American grocery store – a place to pick up all those products you miss from home that you can’t find anywhere else.

If there’s something we don’t have in stock, let us know and we’ll order it in!
We have all your favorites including Twinkies, Pop Tarts, Hidden Valley Ranch, Hot Dog Relish, Fritos original, and much much more!

We hope see to see very soon at 117 rue Fondaudege.

Here are some of the goodies we have in store…
