So summer is fast approaching…. the birds are singing, the sun is trying it’s best to shine her lovely face out from behind the clouds and there is that majestic game of cricket to be played!

The local cricket team is called the Bordeaux Giscours Cricket Club and it would seem that they aren’t that shabby with the bat, taking out the French Championship in last year (2009).

From what I can tell they play their home games in Labarde, north of Bordeaux.

Next home match, get along and show your support for the men in white.

Match Report (courtesy of Neil Vasey):

Super League Rounds 1 & 2 – Sat 10 & Sun 11 April

SL Round 1: Sat 10 April v CCSB95 at Chantilly Cricket & Polo Club

CCSB won the toss and elected to field

Bdx Giscours: 192 for 7 from 40 overs

CCSB95: 194 for 8 from 39.3 overs

A frustrating start to the SL for Bordeaux Giscours CC as this game was well within our …grasp after a decent batting perfomance. However, below-par fielding & catching and some very erratic bowling (38 wides…) let CCSB95 into the game. This was one that got away…

SL Round 2: Sun 11 April v USCA at Parc de Vincennes

USCA won the toss and elected to bat

USCA 339 for 9 from 40 overs

Bdx Giscours 144 all out after 33 overs

The atrocious outfield didn’t make our job any easier but a near shambolic fielding and bowling performance meant that the game was beyond our reach at a very early stage. This was one to forget..

The second annual Anzac Cup in Villers-Bretonneux will be taking place on the 24th of April 2010 with Aussie Spirit taking on the French national Australian football team on the hallowed earth of Villers-Bretonneux.

Some History about the ANZAC legend:

ANZAC Day, the 25th of April, is a very special day in Australian (and New Zealand) history. ANZAC stands for the Australia New Zealand Army Corps and the reason that it is so important is that on the 25th of April, 1915 Australia went into battle for the first time as an independent nation. The Federation of Australia had only been created in 1901 – before that we were a loose collection of colonies.

Their first important mission, together with French, English Newfoundland and Indian troops, was to mount an attack on the Turkish army, German’s ally (the troops disembarked on 25 April 1915 on the Gallipoli peninsula).

The French town of Villers-Bretonneux lays nestled in the region of the Somme, where on April 25, 1918, Australian soldiers saved the town from German forces (precisely three years after the landing at Gallipoli forged Anzac Day).

Each year, the Aussie spirit lives on through the thousands that make the pilgrimage to the Australian National Memorial in Villers-Bretonneux to honour those who fell on France’s Western Front.

The first historical records of Australian Rules being played in Europe was on the battle fields of France during World War 1 between Australian companies and divisions.

This year will be the second annual match, which is now an official part of the ANZAC Day commemorations. The game will see a French side, made up of French players and Aussies living in France, playing against an Australian team made up of expats based in Europe.

This year will see 4 of your very own Bordeaux Bombers take to the pitch against the aussie spirit.

Events and activities will be running from Thursday 22nd April until the 25th April. The Dawn service will be held at the Australian War Memorial 25th April at 5.30am.

It was brought to my attention recently that this long weekend brings about an important event on the Women’s World Pro Surfing circuit.

The Swatch Girls Pro is going to be held from the 12th until the 16th May at the world famous surf breaks of Seignosse and Hossegor and will welcome the elite of women surfers from around the globe.

For its first edition, the Swatch Girls Pro will see a much expected battle take place between current ASP Elite Top 17 members including three-time ASP Women’s World Champion Stephanie Gilmore (Gold Coast, AUS) and uprising talents seeking for valuable ratings’ points.

With the number of ASP Star Series Women’s events in Europe jumping from one in 2009 to four this year and the Swatch Girls Pro allowing the world’s best female surfers to get back to France and surf its powerful quality waves, the set-up for this first edition is ideal.

Classified 6* in the World Qualifying Series (WQS 6*), this event will see the top women surfers competing on one of the world’s top beach break.

The ASP 6-Star Swatch Girls Pro and ASP Grade-2 Swatch Girls Pro Junior run from May 12 to 16 at Les Bourdaines in Seignosse, France.

When: 12th until the 16th May

The 33tours (a rather lousy French play on words involving vinyl speed and another piece of spinning plastic) is Bordeaux’s resident Ultimate Frisbee team.

What is Ultimate Frisbee?

It’s a 7-a-side mixed (girls and boys) team sport based on a firm idea of fair-play (no ref and so no cheating) which is played on a pitch roughly the same size of a traditional football pitch. The sport originates in it’s current form from Canada during the early 1980’s and the French Ultimate Frisbee federation now numbers well over a hundred teams.

The Bordeaux teams trains at home and then takes part in a range of beach, grass and indoor championships throughout France and the north of Spain. The sport is intense, the 7 players need to pass the frisbee between themselves without interceptions from the opposing team or ‘drops’ (shameful fumbles of the disc which means it hits the ground and gets turned over to the other team) and without running with the disc (which requires fancy disc throws) and then catch the disc in an ‘end-zone’ at the far end of the pitch to score a point. Games last between 45 and 90 minutes depending on the discipline.

The 33tours were founded in 2003 by Sylvain Ribailler, who brought the sport to the region from Paris, and the team has been going from strength to strength ever since. This year sees them completing in the French Division 3 and if all goes well this coming weekend during the finals in Fontenay-le-Compte (Vendée) the 33tours will be moving up to Division 2 for the next season.

If you want to find out a little more about the sport, visit our website at http://ultimate33.com. You can even hook up to our Twitter channel at http://twitter.com/33tours for live info.

Training happens every Wednesday at 19h, Terrain 16 at the sports installation at Bordeaux Lac.

Send our admin and coaching team an email at contact@ultimate33.com if you need any more information.
